(NOTE: Some genealogists have John's middle name as Hominy or Homing and others perpetuate this error. Quoting from "The History of Randolph County, Indiana" (at the Wisconsin Historical Society and at Randolph Co. Histoical Society): "Wright - Solomon Wright came with a brother from Ohio in about 1816. There were several different families, but there were more Wrights than any other family . . there were so many John Wrights, that Solomon's father was called Hominy John to distinguish from other Wrights". (Since he likely was a miller, this makes sense.)
Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) Stephens (sister to Keturah and Margaret "Maggie") wrote that John Wright (Hominy John) died in Indiana and we have recently been able to verify that in Randolph County, Indiana. Robert Corkins' aunt, (wife of Charles Wesley Corkins) believed that the Wright family was originally from New England. They had two 'plates', made by Paul Revere, with the Wright family crest. Also, on the plates was a symbol from the Crusades. Robert says this branch of the family has died out and the plates have disappeared. However, Robert did see them in 1988 and knows they existed. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, Paul Revere (1735 - 1818) (best known for his ride on the night of April 18, 1775, to warn the Massachusetts colonists of the approach of the British) was taught the craft of silver smithing by his father. Paul became one of America's greatest artists in silver. During the revolutionary war, Paul and his sons also cast hundreds of church bells. Joyce Swanson, Joan's sister remembers Etta and Birdie (Bertha Ramsett) talking about joining the DAR and couldn't because their ancestors were Quaker* (later confirmed). If Birdie was involved, it was definitely the 'Wright' line that was being looked at. An English friend of Joan's (who's maiden name is Wright) said the name came out of the McLean Clan of Scotland - which could mean there was a coat of arms. (Wright means 'worker' and was often used in combination, i.e. wheelwright, millwright, etc.)
Information from Birdie Ramsett Johnson's descendants state that Gidean(?) and Solomon Wright were cousins to Eber (more likely uncles?). Other notes from Birdie indicate that Solomon was born in Green County, Tennessee in 1802, (Holston River), and moved to Clinton County, Ohio in 1804 and, where she is likely quoting from history books of Clinton Co. Ohio: (recorded here) " First Sheriff David Wright appointed by Gov. Jennings to organize the Co. 1818 . . First Officers John W., first Ass't judge, Solomon (not a son, but possibly a brother to John Sr.) elected Coroner . . Clinton Co. Ohio where the Wrights came from (these could be children of Hominy John's brother James, as it appears James stayed in Clinton County). .'Salisbury then Co. Seat of Wayne Co. . . grandfather James . . brother Thos. . . Carolinian Quaker fled to wilds of Holston Tennessee to escape conscription in the army in the war of 1776. Father John - - grandfather James . . John Wright married Margaret Reece (Reese). . Carolina. 1804 the Wrights went to Ohio . . James and Abraham came first. (The move to Indiana - Isaac and Solomon, Mar 10, 1816. . . on one horse . . riding and 'tying' got to James's. From Clinton Co. to . . "Maynersville, Springborn, Eaton, New Paris, Williamburg, Indiana . . Muncie from an old Indian Montzie (an old Indian) - -Lillian Garrett Solomon W. grandaughter". Some of these notes are difficult to read but recently been verified and helped considerably in getting on the 'right' Wright track.
A Gencircles website (gencircles.com/users/nellyhogan/1/data/417) has these notes about John "His family left NC (SC?) and moved to Ohio because they did not agree with the slavery policies of the state. After the war of 1812, the government took land from Quakers in the area (Ohio) and gave it to the soldiers who had fought in the war in lieu of wages. He had to leave Ohio and migrated with his family."
(Joan hired a genealogist in Dayton, Montgomery County Ohio to search for any John Wrights. This idea was stimulated by the 'bell' that has Dayton, Ohio inscribed on it c. 1849) -the genealogist could not find any of our ancestors in the Dayton area.)
Quaker records (c. 1810 - 1825): The following MM (monthly meetings) have records of Wrights: New Hope, New Garden, White River (Indiana where they went) and Newberry (S. Carolina and Tennessee). Another reference - John Wright 'started Martinsville, Ohio (Clinton County) group (possibly another John W ?,) under the direction of Clear Creek MM'. A history of Clinton County written in 1982 (by the Clinton Co. Historical Society) mentions an "inspection tour" and noted that John and James Wright and families settled Todd's Fork, Dover Neighborhood, and formed the nucleus of the Society of Friends in Dover. (Clinton Co. Historical Society,149 East Locust, Wilmington, Ohio.) Clearly our ancestors were Quaker, but if a family crest was involved earlier, it appears they likely were converts, possibly after they came to this country or before they left England.
