[Leif Knutsen] Lived on Haugsødegard in Stange in 1865. Olea Alfsdatter was probably the heir to this farm. No children were on the farm in 1875, according to the census.

Bodde p Haugsdegrd i Stange i 1865. Troligvis var Olea Alfsdatter odelsjente p denne grden. Ingen barn bodde p grden ved folketellingen.
FAGERNES, Hans Knudsen
Birth : 19 February 1813
Death : 6 April 1896

[Leif Knutsen] Lived on Nøkleholm in Stange in 1865. Took over the farm - probably with heiress Maren Pedersdatter Nøkleholm. See Bygdebok for Stange, p. 566.

His great-grandchild Åmund Elveseter writes about Hans that "he was a well-travelled and wise man who travelled around the community as a rotational teacher. Not many could write at the time. He had a handwriting you would never have seen. For many years he was the secretary for mayor Ringnes, who was illiterate. Whenever a difficult document needed to be crafted, they would come to him. He was at the same time like an attorney in the community, and had many appointments of trust. Among other things he had his children vaccinated against smallpox. He arranged for a library at Nøkleholm, and it was probably a special time when others came and borrowed books. The lender's name was ceremoniously written into the book with a quill. ---

Doesn't seem right Bodde i Nkleholm i Stange i 1865. Tok over grd sammen med (troligvis) odelsjente Maren Pedersdatter Nkleholm. Se Bygdebok for Stange, s 566,

RAMSETH, Karen Knudsdatter
Birth : 10 February 1819 in Stange, Hedmark, Norway
Death : 25 November 1889 in Hamar, Norway
[Henry Ramsett ancestors.ged]

[Leif Knutsen] Ran Ramseth from 1841 to 1850, and this is probably why they took the name Ramseth and not Hoff. Karen Ramseth opened Hamar's first cafe in the 1850s. The lived in a house known as "Åsgården" by Stortorvet. Simen Jønsrud, who is supposed to have been Ole's brother-in-law, opened another beverage concession on Stortorvet, and Karen and Ole built a house there in 1863. This house was known as the Ramseth house until it was demolished in 1968. Their son Knud did most of the work, and Karen ran the cafe until she died in 1890. ---

Rolf Erickson writes: In Stange, a county district (bygd) in Hedemark, Norway, not far from the city of Hamar, is a farm (gaard) called Ramseth. The owner of this farm, Karen, fell in love with a young man named Ole Hov. They were married, and he changed his name to Ole Ramseth. She did not change her name because according to custom, the name of the farm which you lived on was the name you used. Ole and Karen had a big family of seven, four boys and three girls. The boys' names were Paul, Knute, Severin, and Christen. The girls were named Berthe, Karoline, and Martine. Here again we can see the custom of giving children the name of their grandparents. It appears that it was strictly adhered to in the Ramseth family. If that was the case then it is possible to figure out who the grandparents were. Ole Hoved Ramseth's parents would then be Paul and Bertha Hov. Karen Ramseth's parents would then be Knute and Karoline [sic] Ramseth.

The farm was sold soon after the children were born, and they moved to the city of Hamar. Here Ole supported his family as a carpenter. He died rather young, however, and his widow Karen was forced to open a coffee shop in the downstairs of a
large, three story house which she owned at the corner of of the public square. In the large back yard there were sheds where farmers who brought their produce to sell in the public square would keep their wagons and horses. Karen served coffee and wheat rolls and the place under the name of the "Ramseth Kafee-Stue" was well patronized. After Karen's death, Bertha and Karoline (they were never married) continued with the shop until they died. (When Ivar and Bertha went to Norway in 1937, they found that the coffee shop was still running under the same name although it was being ....were strangers to them. It seems that Christen's widow, Eveline, had inherited it, and she had willed to them under the condition that they would take care of her until she died.

[Leif Knutsen] Anton Tøsti writes that they took over Ramseth after Karen's father in 1843. There were several of Karen's siblings of minority who put a drag on the transfer and the financial situation on the farm. Combined with the difficult agricultural conditions in 1850, they likely had to give up the farm in 1850. They moved to Hamar. Ole started as a carpenter, and Karen opened a cafe near Stortorvet. They build their own house in 1863 (later known as Torvgaten 95). This is where the Ramseth cafe was. There was a cafe in the Ramseth house from 1863 to 1962, and the house was demolished in 1968. When Karen died in 1980 her daugher Berthe and Karoline took over the cafe. With the exception of a short period when the sisters ran a cafe in Christiania, and a short period in America, the cafe was operational until Karoline died in 1964. ---

Anton Tsti skriver: De tok over Ramset etter Karens far i 1843. Her holdt siden Ramsethkafeen til.
