Obituary Transcribed and sent by Joanne Weber Groth:

OBITUARIES:

Mrs. John Verness - Anna Ryberg was born in Norway, April 14th, 1851, died in West Concord, Minn. Jan. 22nd, 1919 at the home of her sister Mrs. Thos. Tollefson. She came to this country with her parents when she was a mere girl. Forty-two years ago she came to Ellington township and settled on what is known as the home farm. She was married to Ole Tollefson in the year 1875. To this union were born three children, one of whom survives, Mrs Lena Weber, of Minneapolis, Mr Tollefson passed away Nov 17, 1879. In the year 1882 she was married to John Verness. To this union were born two children, both of whom survive. Mrs Clara Peckenpaugh, of Canada and William, who lives on the home farm. Mr Verness passed away May, 1918. The deceased was confirmed in the Lutheran church and also was a member of the Rebecca lodge here. She was certainly one of the most humble, devoted of mothers. She believed in the prayer life. The writer often called on her during her sickness and she often expressed the thought that God hears and answers prayer. She had an explicit trust in her Savior. Realizing the end was approaching she gave testimony to the fact that she was simply waiting to answer the roll call above. She was ready for the summons and when it came, the
spirit took its flight to the realms above. She leaves behind to mourn their loss, besides those mentioned above, two sister, Mrs. Holden of Garvin, Minn., and Mrs. Martha Tollefson of West Concord. Those who attended the funeral from a distance were as follows: Mrs. Clara Peckenpaugh, Riley, Alberta, Canada; Mrs. Lena Weber and four children, Mrs. Quackenbush and daughter, Mrs. Hanson, Mrs. Werness and Mr and Mrs O. Brown, all of Minneapolis; and Mrs. George Lyon, of Faribault, Minn. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home of Thos. Tollefson and was conducted by the Rev. Thomas Carson and the body laid to rest in Concord Cemetery.

Clara Peckenpaugh was the natural daughter of Anna and John Verness. Lena was the only child of Anna and Ole. John Verness was the foreman on their farm prior to marrying Anna. I would assume this happened in the old town of Concord before the town was moved to West Concord due to the route of the railroad.

OBITUARIES:

John A. Verness - John Arne Verness was born in Norway, Nov. 13, 1855; at 25 years of age he came to this country. He was married March 11, 1882 to Mrs. Annie Tollefson. To this union were born two children, Clara, now Mrs. Robert Peckenpaugh, of Riley, Alberta, and William, who resides at home. The deceased was confirmed in the Lutheran church in his native land and was a member of the I.O.O.F. of West Concord. A good man, a faithful husband, a never failing friend, a useful citizen a wise counselor. There was nothing narrow or bigoted in the mind of Mr. Verness. He believed in all churches and said to the writer one was just as good as the other. He knew the time was drawing near to the end and prepared himself for the great hereafter. He put his trust in Jesus. He told his loved ones 'we shall meet again on the other side'. He died in the faith. Two weeks ago today , the writer called on him and administered the sacrament of the Lord's supper. It was certainly a great service and the spirit of God was present. He passed away in the morning of May 3rd, 1918. He leaves behind to mourn his loss, his wife, the two children, one step-daughter, Mrs. Lena Weber, of Minneapolis, five grandchildren and five sisters, of whom three reside in Minneapolis, one in Fairbault and one in Norway and one brother residing here, besides a large number of neighbors and friends. The Odd Fellow of this place had charge of the funeral. Rev. Thos Carson of the Methodist church officiated. The body was laid to rest in Concord cemetery Sunday afternoon May 5th. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in this section of the county, with about 50 autos following the remains. The floral tributes were beautiful and profuse.
