William Brewster was a leader of the Plymouth colony in America. He spent his early life at Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, England. His 'Separatist" ideas were acquired while at Peterhouse, Cambridge. In 1583 he became the personal secretary of William Davison, an Elizabethan diplomat. Due to his disillusionment with diplomatic life and because of his father's illness he returned to Scrooby and became the leader of the Puritan congregation that separated from the 'Established Church' in 1606. He moved to Holland and printed English Puritan books that were sent to England. England forced the abandonment of this enterprise . He thence accompanied the first group of settlers on the "Mayflower" in 1620 and remained, until his death, one of the most important members of the Plymouth colony. Brewster (the only university trained Pilgrim) was the real leader of the church in Plymouth and dominated the formulation of its worship and practices. William Bradford (also indirectly related to the Tilden's) was very dependant on him.
The Brewster connection through John Thompson and Hannah Brewster is subject to further verification - - some of the marriage and birth dates do not make sense (per Joan Schuette).
