Charles (Carl Berndt) Bennett was known to us as "Uncle Charlie". The story our parent's told us was that he raised Oscar and lived in the Featherstone-Red Wing area most of his life. There is a picture of him and his wife Ellen in Joan's notebook. In the 1880 census he was married and had two children. A copy of Charles Bennett's obituary (from the Daily Republican Eagle) in Joan's notebook. He died at a Red Wing hospital. The obituary says he came from Sweden with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Brendt (Berndt) Christianson (note spellings). As was common in Sweden at the time, the son took the first name of the father as a last name (i.e. Nelson = Nel's son). He took the name Berndt which later became Bennett. Charles spent most of his life farming in the Featherstone area and after his retirement in 1919 he moved to Red Wing, (living at 1227 S. Park). Also found in the DRE of Red Wing was a record of his 58th (January 25, 1935) and again his 61st (1938) wedding anniversary. At the time of his 61st anniversary, four children were listed: Clifford of Red Wing, Ruth Mattson, Red Wing, Esther Swanson, Minneapolis, and George Bennett of Ellsworth, Wisconsin. Oscar Bennett is not mentioned in either his obit or anniversary records. Joan remembers attending a big party at "Uncle Charlie's" - probably the one in 1938. Charles and Ellen Olson were married by Pastor Anderson, witnesses were August Carlson and Johanna Berndt.
