GENERAL NOTES ON TILDEN'S
(Information on early this early Tilden genealogy comes from "The Original Western Branch of the Tildens in America" by John Leslie Tilden (unpublished) on file with LDS Catalogue No. 897417, "Samuel J. Tilden and the Stolen Election" by Bill Severn, notes from a genealogist used by Joyce Bennett Swanson, also "The Early Planters of Scituate" (Scituate Genealogical Society) and notes found in material from Helen Tilden McGovern. (also see appended notes)
Sir Richard Tylden (1154 - 1189) (from notes by Joyce Swanson): His ancestors intermarried with a Norman the Earl of Chester, who was a nephew of William the Conqueror. Also that there was intermarriage with the family of Fitzhugh Baron Lord of Milpos and nephew of Hugh Lupus from Auranches in Normandy, nephew of William the Conqueror. (Sources not listed and no confirmation.)

The places of birth for most of the English born Tildens (deTildenn, etc.) is Kent County, England. The towns listed are in the area around Tenterden and Cranbrook. This seems consistent with the embarkation from Sandwich (see Nathaniel Tilden) which is the closest major port. In some historical notes of Tildens' a Sir Richard Tylden (1154-1189) is mentioned. It is said his ancestors intermarried with the Norman, Earl of Chester who was a nephew of William the Conqueror.

Notes on William I (Conqueror) c.1028-1087, King of England from 1066-1087. He descended from Viking "freebooters" and warlords who, from the middle of the ninth century, first plundered and then settled north-western France. He inherited his "Duchy", Normandy from his father Duke Robert. Various wars and skirmishes led to the invasion of England by William and he ended claiming the English throne, thus began the Norman rule in England. (Most of this information is from the Encyclopedia Britannica.)
