Elbert has written a very interesting history of the early years in Dodge County. It was written in 1928 in St. Paul when he must have been 70 years old. This document is appended to these records. It is through this record that Joan was able to learn the married names of William Tilden's daughters and just exactly who came to Dodge County c.1854-57.

Elbert's maternal grandfather was Samuel Reed, also an early settler of the area. There are still Reeds living in the area and a large plot in the Concord Cemetery of "Reeds" adjacent to the Tilden, Wright and Pease graves. His step-mother was the older sister of William Tilden's second wife. His grandmother Reed took care of him when his mother died. When Austin married Mary Jane Sherwood he went back to live with his father, his sister Sarah stayed with his grandmother.
