January 27 - March 12, 2013

Over a year ago Bobbie and I decided that we wanted to alter our traveling patterns slightly and go south for the month of February and hopefully miss the worst of the cold. Well, it didn't quite work out that way. Virginia had a very mild February and instead of returning to the beginning of spring we encountered late cold winter weather in mid March. Yet, the trip was fun visiting with friends and family along our way there and on our way back.

Charlotte and Atlanta

We were able to stop and see former students who of course have become friends as we drove to our final destination of Panama City Beach, Florida.

Our first stop was to see Mark and Kristin Harman as well as their daughter Briann in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Now, it was off to see Kara and Laura Kavanagh in Atlanta. We had a wonderful dinner with both of them on our arrival. Laura was busy finishing up ab important project at work while Kara took us to the Atlanta History Museum the following day.

He may look authentic but he is just a Senex (an old man). The first time I went to the theater to see Ted Turner's 'Gettysburg' I was practicaly accosted by this man who kept on insisting that I was one of the re-enactors in the movie. I kept trying to explain to him that playing at war isn't something that I would enjoy and that was when I could still walk. Then I had to remind myself that this is Virginia and they still take 'The War' (with an emphasis on the) seriously.

This is a museum dedicated to the history of Atlanta though it was slanted toward the Civil War. There was a nice section on the Olympics and especially the 1996 Summer Olympics.

We had a lot of fun with Kara but she had to get back to work and we found ourselves with a day which was cool and wintry even for city that most identify with warmth and heat. We decided to go downtown and take a closer look at 'Centennial Olympic Park'. We still had another former student to see but that had to wait until the next day so we bundled up and revisited the Olympics.

The Shabans

Karin was the best SCA President who was not a president that I ever had during my entire tenure as Faculty Advisor to the Student Council. To say she was capable is to understate the capability and depth of this woman, wife, and mother. There is nothing one dimensional about Karin because there is nothing pragmatic about her. She has a heart that has enabled her to express the emotion of love and affection that she has shared whith so many.
