ROMSÅS, Iver Knudsen
[Henry Ramsett ancestors.ged]
[Translation by Leif Knutsen March 13, 2003]
--- Eyolf Knutsen estimates that Iver Knudsen Romsas and his wife moved
to Stange in 1767, since this would coincide with when his brother Christian came from Sollia and bought the Hof-farm in Stange. It appears
that the two owned the farm jointly for two years, after which they sold it with a "minor" profit. But the Tangen farm, also known as
Hoffstangen, was not part of this sale and remained in the family until Iver died in 1784. ---
Men
--- Anton Tøsti writes: we don't know where Iver those years between his
birth and when he moved to Tangen. The first child, Anne, was christened in Ringeby on July 2nd, 1767. Already July 11th the same year Iver's
bror Kristen (Christian) received the deed for the Hov in Tangen, and Christian Ringnes, Iver was part of this purchase. There is little
reason to doubt this, since Jon Iversen subsequently married into the Ringnes-family, and Christian Ringnes would know about the arrangements
this way. ---
--- Already on July 13th 1770 Kristen Knutsen sells the Hov-farm, and
Iver Knutsen becomes the owner of the small farm Tangen, which was excluded from the sale. The property at Tangen was not large, but it fed
three cows and a horse. Iver died soon, in 1784, only 55 years old, and left a widow and six children - the eldest 17 years old, the youngest one
year old. The widow remarried with Tåle Johansen Hoel from Vang, 15 years her junior. She was only 40 years old then, but did not have any
children in her second marriage. ---
Iver dde allerede i
Ringnes sittende i
ytterst vanskelige kr.
barn i annet ekteskap.
--- Here we'll take a small detour and examine the conditions in the area
around Tangen. Not far from Hovs-tangen, which was how the property was known, Korsødegården was a stagecoach station. This station had,
according to "Practical Guide from 1840" very good "night quarters"
"whose hostess much liked to hear news from the city." Travelers came
and went, either south to Kristiania or north to Østerdalen or Gudbrandsdalen. Those who went to Gudbrandsdalen had their next station
at Nøkleby in Stange; those going to Østerdalen went through Irstad in
Romedal. But all had to go through Korsødegården. Between Korsødegården
and the next station to the south, the "road consists only of hills."
Christian Ringnes believes that it was better to ride this stretch, and the sons at the Tangen farms had the job of bringing the horses back.
Near Tangen was also Vigs Brug, a sawmill. There were also nail factories and other industrial activity that offered employment. ---
Over Korsdegrden mtte alle.
Bakker". Chr.
Her var
--- As we mentioned above, Mari married Tåle Johansen after Iver died,
but it could not have been easy with so many children on a small farm. But if we considered how successful some of these children were, we'd
have to reach the conclusion that this must have been an industrious flock of children who early learned to adapt to the realities of life.
We could also add - without the means to substantiate it - that there would have been jobs for the sons both at Vik Brug and the stagecoach
station. The mother and children also ran a small store, and sold food and other necessities to the workers at Vik. ---
